Firsts, Lasts & Onlys: Golf
Golf is a game that is played in virtually every country of the world. It has a long and venerable history going back 700 or so years. As such, this book could not hope to be a comprehensive history of the game. What it does, is to take a lively look at some of the more interesting aspects of golf over the years. It will hopefully find favour with fans young and old as they dip into stories about golf and its players past and present.
One wag described golf as "an infuriating game that brings out the worst in people. Why was it called golf? Because all the other four letter words were taken." Another rather sexist player suggested that golf stood for "Gentleman Only, Ladies Forbidden" - tell that to Babe Zaharias or, more recently, Michelle Wie! Mark Twain called golf "a good walk spoiled" but how wrong was he! The terrific thing about what Nick Faldo calls "this great game" is that it can be played and enjoyed by all ages, virtually all fitness levels and yes, of course, by men and women. John Updike said, "Golf appeals to the idiot in us and the child. Just how childlike golf players become is proven by their frequent inability to count up to five." The creator of Winnie the Pooh and (in more ways than one) Christopher Robin, A.A. Milne said, "Golf is popular because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad." The game also gives you an excuse to wear loud clothes in public without being the subject of derision, well... not too much. Tiger Woods said, "[Ice] Hockey is a sport for white men. Basketball is a sport for black men. Golf is a game for white men dressed as black pimps."
